Housekeeping jobs in Northern Ireland are plentiful in 2026. Belfast’s hotel boom, a growing Causeway Coast tourism trade, five health and social care trusts and hundreds of care homes all need room attendants, domestic assistants and housekeeping supervisors, and most pay at or a little above the National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour.
Here is the part many job adverts leave out: since the July 2025 rule changes, housekeeping cannot be sponsored under the Skilled Worker visa. It sits well below the graduate-level (RQF 6) threshold and is not on the Temporary Shortage List, so no employer in Northern Ireland, however large, can bring a new housekeeper in from overseas on a work visa. Anyone telling you otherwise is either mistaken or selling something.
That does not mean these jobs are closed to people born outside the UK. Irish citizens, EU citizens with settled status, visa dependants, students, Youth Mobility Scheme participants and several other groups can all take them legally. Can you get visa sponsorship for housekeeping in Northern Ireland?
No, not as a new applicant from abroad. Immigration is a matter reserved to Westminster, so Northern Ireland uses exactly the same rules as England, Scotland and Wales. Under those rules the Skilled Worker visa now generally requires a job at RQF level 6 and a salary of at least £41,700 or the going rate. Housekeeping, room attendant and domestic assistant roles are classed at RQF 1 to 2, and even head housekeeper and housekeeping manager roles do not reach the graduate threshold.
The Temporary Shortage List keeps a small set of RQF 3 to 5 occupations sponsorable until the end of 2026 (under review), but hospitality and cleaning roles are not on it. The one narrow exception is a genuinely graduate-level hotel management role, which is a different job at a different salary, and the employer must appear on the Register of Licensed Sponsors. Who can legally work in housekeeping in Northern Ireland?
Employers must check your right to work before your first shift. The groups below can take housekeeping jobs without any sponsorship:
- British and Irish citizens. Under the Common Travel Area, Irish citizens can live and work anywhere in Northern Ireland with no visa or permit. This makes the border counties a natural labour pool for Derry, Newry and Enniskillen employers.
- EU, EEA and Swiss citizens with EU Settlement Scheme status (settled or pre-settled) and their family members with EUSS status.
- Dependants of Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker and most other work visa holders, who have unrestricted permission to work.
- Student visa holders at degree level, up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in vacations, and Graduate visa holders without restriction.
- Youth Mobility Scheme visa holders aged 18 to 30 (35 for some nationalities) from participating countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, South Korea and India, for up to two years.
- People with indefinite leave to remain, refugee status, Ukraine scheme leave, BN(O) status or a Frontier Worker permit.
One trap catches people every year. Living in the Republic of Ireland does not give a non-EEA national the right to work across the border. An Irish residence permit is not a UK work permission, and an employer in Northern Ireland who hires on that basis risks a civil penalty. If you hold Irish citizenship or EUSS status you are fine; if you hold only an Irish work permit, you are not.
Where are the jobs?
Hotels in Belfast, Derry and the coast
Belfast has added thousands of hotel rooms since 2018 and demand for room attendants runs year round, peaking around conferences, concerts and the summer cruise season. Groups operating in the city include Hastings Hotels, Hilton and Marriott alongside independent four-star properties in the Cathedral and Titanic quarters. Derry/Londonderry has a smaller hotel cluster, while Portrush, Portstewart and Bushmills hire heavily from Easter to October. Check each group’s official careers page rather than third-party adverts.
Health and social care trusts
The five HSC trusts (Belfast, Northern, South Eastern, Southern and Western) employ domestic services staff in hospitals and community facilities. These are public-sector jobs with Agenda for Change pay bands, unsocial-hours enhancements, a defined-benefit pension and paid sick leave, which makes them the most secure housekeeping work in the region. Vacancies are advertised on the official HSC recruitment site, jobs.hscni.net, and often close quickly.
Care homes and supported living
Northern Ireland has several hundred registered care homes, from national groups to family-run homes in towns across the six counties. Domestic and laundry assistants are needed on every site. Pay is usually at the National Living Wage, but shifts are regular and many homes offer a route into care assistant or senior roles for staff already legally in the UK.
Universities, student halls and serviced apartments
Queen’s University Belfast, Ulster University and the private student accommodation blocks around them recruit housekeeping staff, with a summer surge for conference lettings. The National Living Wage rose to £12.71 for workers aged 21 and over in April 2026. Younger workers have lower legal minimums, but many hotels pay the full rate to everyone. If an employer offers below £12.71 to an adult, that is unlawful.
How does the cost of living compare?
A room in a shared house in Belfast typically costs £450 to £600 a month, and a one-bedroom flat £750 to £950, well below Dublin, London or Manchester. Derry, Newry and the mid-Ulster towns are cheaper again. How to apply for housekeeping jobs in Northern Ireland
- Confirm your right to work and, if you hold an eVisa or EUSS status, generate a share code from your UKVI account before you apply.
- Get a National Insurance number if you do not already have one; you can start work while it is pending.
- Search the right places: JobApplyNI on nidirect, the HSC recruitment portal, hotel group careers pages, and recruitment agencies with Belfast offices that specialise in hospitality and facilities staff.
- Prepare a one-page CV that lists cleaning, laundry or hospitality experience, shift availability and any food hygiene or manual handling training.
- Expect a short interview and a trial shift for hotel roles; HSC trusts use a formal application form and shortlisting criteria, so answer every point on the person specification.

Costs to budget for and insurance you will need
If you are already in the UK on a visa, the main costs are settling costs: a rental deposit of up to five weeks’ rent, the first month in advance, and uniform or safety shoes if not provided. Health care is free at the point of use for people who are ordinarily resident or have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge, so private health insurance is optional. Scam warning
Because housekeeping cannot be sponsored, any advert for “housekeeping jobs in Northern Ireland with free visa sponsorship” aimed at people outside the UK is fraudulent. Common versions charge a “processing fee” for a fake Certificate of Sponsorship, use the name of a real Belfast hotel, or send a convincing offer letter with a request for money. Legitimate employers never charge for a job offer, sponsorship or a right-to-work check, and only regulated advisers or solicitors may charge for immigration advice. Career progression
Housekeeping is one of the few hotel departments where people regularly move from the floor to management: room attendant to team leader in two to three years, then floor supervisor and head housekeeper. Can an Irish citizen work in a Belfast hotel without any paperwork?
Yes. Irish citizens have an automatic right to live and work in the UK under the Common Travel Area. You will still need to show a passport or passport card for the right-to-work check and obtain a UK National Insurance number.
Can I switch from a Student visa to a housekeeping job full time?
