If you want to relocate to Australia for high-paying jobs, the realistic targets are clear: medical specialists, senior mining and energy professionals, and technology leaders are the people who reach AUD 200,000 to AUD 250,000 and beyond. Australia built a dedicated fast lane for exactly this group in December 2024, the Specialist Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa, and it sits alongside permanent options such as the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) and the points-tested visas.
This guide is for experienced professionals, not entry-level job seekers. It explains which roles genuinely pay at the top of the market, which visa fits each situation, what the move costs, and how much of a big salary you keep after Australian tax. Nothing here promises a job or a visa, and the rules change every July.
Which jobs in Australia actually pay up to $250,000?
Australian full-time average earnings sit a little above AUD 100,000 a year, so a package of AUD 180,000 or more puts you among the top earners. Those packages cluster in a handful of fields where skills are scarce.
| Field | Typical roles | Realistic salary range (AUD, 2026) | What employers look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medicine | Anaesthetists, psychiatrists, surgeons, radiologists, rural generalists, GPs | 200,000 – 500,000+ | AHPRA registration, specialist college recognition, willingness to work regionally |
| Mining and resources | Mining engineers, mine managers, geotechnical engineers, metallurgists, drill and blast superintendents | 150,000 – 300,000 | Site experience, statutory tickets, fly-in fly-out (FIFO) rosters |
| Energy and infrastructure | Project directors, senior electrical engineers, grid and renewables specialists | 160,000 – 280,000 | Major project delivery, chartered status |
| Technology leadership | Engineering managers, principal engineers, cloud and security architects, heads of data and AI | 170,000 – 280,000 | Scale, architecture depth, team leadership |
All figures are in Australian dollars and are market ranges from public salary guides and job adverts, not guarantees. Always ask whether a quoted figure includes superannuation.
Medical specialists
Medicine is the most reliable route to the top bracket. Public hospital staff specialists earn strong base salaries with allowances, and private billing can lift total income well above AUD 400,000 in procedural specialties. Every doctor must be registered with the Medical Board of Australia through AHPRA, and overseas-trained doctors are usually directed to areas of workforce shortage for their first years. We cover registration pathways in detail in our guide to visa sponsorship in Australia for healthcare professionals.
Mining, oil and gas
Western Australia and Queensland pay a premium for people who will work remote rosters such as eight days on and six off, or two weeks on and one off. Major employers include BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, Woodside, Santos, Newmont and the large contractors that serve them. Experienced mining engineers and superintendents regularly earn AUD 180,000 to AUD 250,000, and statutory mine managers earn more.
Technology leadership
Individual contributors in Australian tech are paid well, but the AUD 200,000-plus packages usually go to principal engineers, architects and engineering managers at the big banks, Atlassian, Canva, global cloud vendors and well-funded scale-ups in Sydney and Melbourne. If Melbourne is on your list, our Melbourne relocation guide for tech professionals breaks down tax, rent and lifestyle on an AUD 150,000 salary.
What is the Specialist Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa?
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) replaced the old Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024. It has three streams, and the one built for high earners is the Specialist Skills stream.
- Income threshold: your guaranteed annual earnings must be at least the Specialist Skills Income Threshold, which was AUD 141,210 from 1 July 2025 and is indexed every 1 July. Check the current figure on the Department of Home Affairs website before you negotiate.
- Occupation: almost any occupation in ANZSCO major groups 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 qualifies. Trades workers, machinery operators, drivers and labourers are excluded from this stream, whatever they earn.
- Experience: at least one year of relevant work experience in the past five years.
- Stay: up to four years, with a pathway to permanent residence.
The Core Skills stream is the fallback if your salary is below the specialist threshold. It requires an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List and pay of at least AUD 76,515 (the 1 July 2025 figure, also indexed annually) and no less than the Australian market rate.
In both streams the employer must be an approved standard business sponsor, lodge a nomination, and pay the Skilling Australians Fund levy. That levy and the sponsorship costs legally sit with the employer and cannot be passed to you.
Which permanent visas suit high earners?
Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)
The 186 visa gives permanent residence from day one. It has two main streams. The Temporary Residence Transition stream is for people who have worked for their sponsor on a 482 visa for two years. The Direct Entry stream lets an employer nominate you for permanent residence straight away if you have a positive skills assessment and at least three years of relevant experience. You must generally be under 45, with exemptions for some high-income earners, academics and regional medical practitioners.
Points-tested visas: 189, 190 and 491
The Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491) visas do not need an employer. You lodge an expression of interest in SkillSelect, need at least 65 points, and wait for an invitation. In practice, invitations for popular occupations go to people with far more than 65 points, and health and teaching occupations have been prioritised in recent rounds. Salary earns no points, so an older high earner can struggle here even when an employer would sponsor them tomorrow.
How to relocate to Australia for a high-paying job: step by step
- Confirm your occupation and licensing. Find your ANZSCO occupation, then check whether you need registration or a licence (AHPRA for health, state engineering registers in Queensland and Victoria).
- Benchmark your pay. Compare public salary guides from major recruiters with live adverts on SEEK and LinkedIn. Make sure the base salary, excluding super, clears the visa threshold you are aiming at.
- Build an Australian-style CV. Three to four pages, achievements with numbers, no photo, and a short line on your visa position such as “requires employer sponsorship, eligible for Specialist Skills stream”.
- Target approved sponsors. Large miners, health services, banks, consultancies and universities sponsor routinely.
- Negotiate the whole package. Ask about relocation allowance, temporary accommodation, visa costs for your family, health cover and whether the employer will support a 186 nomination later.
- Nomination and visa application. The employer lodges the nomination; you lodge the visa with identity documents, evidence of experience, English results if required, health checks and police certificates.
- Land and set up. Apply for a tax file number, open a bank account, choose a super fund and organise health cover before your first payday.
What will you keep after tax?
Australia has no state income tax, but federal rates are progressive and the top rate of 45 per cent applies above AUD 190,000. Most residents also pay a 2 per cent Medicare levy. The figures below are rounded estimates for an Australian tax resident using the 2026–27 resident rates, excluding superannuation and any offsets.
| Gross salary (AUD) | Approximate tax and Medicare levy | Approximate take-home per year | Approximate take-home per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150,000 | 39,600 | 110,400 | 9,200 |
| 200,000 | 59,900 | 140,100 | 11,700 |
| 250,000 | 83,400 | 166,600 | 13,900 |
Use the Australian Taxation Office’s online calculator for your exact position. Temporary residents are generally not taxed in Australia on most foreign investment income, and high earners without private hospital cover may pay the Medicare levy surcharge. Your employer must also pay 12 per cent superannuation on top of salary, up to a quarterly cap. This article is general information, not tax or financial advice.
Costs to budget for before you move
- Visa charges: the primary applicant fee for a 482 visa is in the low thousands of dollars, with additional charges for a partner and each child. Fees rise most years on 1 July.
- Skills assessment and registration: from several hundred dollars for an engineering assessment to several thousand for medical exams and college assessments.
- Health insurance: 482 holders must maintain adequate health cover. Unless you come from a country with a reciprocal health care agreement, that means overseas visitor health cover from a fund such as Bupa, Medibank or nib. Our overview of health insurance plans for expats explains what to compare.
- Housing: a rental bond of around four weeks’ rent plus rent in advance. Family homes in inner Sydney can exceed AUD 1,200 a week.
- Migration advice: if you pay for help, use a registered migration agent listed with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) or an Australian legal practitioner.
- Moving money: compare a specialist international money transfer service against your bank’s exchange rate before moving your savings; the margin on a large transfer can run into thousands.
Scam warning for senior candidates
Senior professionals are targeted too, usually through fake recruiter profiles and “executive placement” firms that charge upfront. A genuine Australian employer does not charge you for a job offer or for sponsorship, and it is unlawful for a sponsor to ask you to pay for the nomination or the training levy. Verify any migration agent on the OMARA register, and only lodge visa applications through the official ImmiAccount portal at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a high-paying job in Australia without a job offer?
You can migrate without one through the points-tested 189, 190 or 491 visas, but you then job-hunt after arrival. For salaries above AUD 140,000, employer sponsorship under the Specialist Skills stream is usually faster and more predictable than waiting for an invitation.
Is $250,000 a realistic salary for a newcomer?
Only in a few fields. Procedural medical specialists, senior mining leaders and executives reach it; most experienced engineers and technologists land between AUD 150,000 and AUD 220,000. Treat AUD 250,000 as the ceiling of the range, not the typical offer.
Do I need an English test for the Specialist Skills stream?
Most applicants must show English ability unless they hold a passport from an exempt country such as the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada or New Zealand, or studied for several years in English. Accepted tests include IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and OET. Professional registration bodies often set a higher standard than the visa does.
How long until I can get permanent residence?
Through the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream, you can be nominated after two years of work on your 482 visa. With three years of experience and a skills assessment, an employer can nominate you under Direct Entry without the waiting period.
Bottom line
Australia is one of the few countries with a visa stream designed around salary rather than an occupation list, and that works in favour of senior doctors, mining professionals and technology leaders. Secure the offer first, make sure the base pay clears the current threshold, let the employer carry the sponsorship costs, and plan your route to the 186 visa from the first contract negotiation.
